The World Goes Madly On...
<<<--- -- 20 July 2007 -- --->>>

It's amazing how busy I am these days....although I look at what I have to show for it and wonder how on earth I seem to have no time. But between acupuncture for this neck/shoulder thing, music music music, tending the plants (I have baby tomatoes! And, ye gods, the flowers! I heart snapdragons.), the day job, some sleep every now and then....yeah, turns out I have less time than I want.

My housekeeping suffers...

I recently rediscovered "Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)," the voiceover non-rap Baz Luhrman put out in...hrm...must be 1999 or so, considering the date. I remember when it came out, driving around Atlanta in crazy traffic, going to auditions and rehearsals when theater was the art in my life (before I started writing music with anything other than vague notions of doing anythign with it). I loved this track, despite the fact that wearing sunscreen has only rarely prevented me from getting sunburned.

If you haven't heard it, find this track and give it a listen. It's brilliant.

It's also in keeping with what's been on my mind these days. I'm feeling very inspired to *do* something. I feel like there are so many crazy problems in the world, so many people engaged in so much needless suffering, from genocide and terrorism to famine and natural disasters to religious persecution and the fear-mongering that is marketing. The world is fucking crazy.

I saw a documentary last night that addresses some of the crazy - it's called "America the Beautiful," and it tackles America's obsession with physical perfection. It covers the beauty industry and how it poisons us with chemicals that affect fertility, the deadly risks of cosmetic surgery, children dieting, the insane standards models are held to, the objectification of women, and the affect that the media, fashion, and advertising industries have on self-esteem - and the physical damage that is done as a result. It's a brilliant flick, and something I think everyone in the world ought to be required to watch.

My favorite moment is a story told by Eve Ensler (of "The Vagina Monologues" fame) about a conversation she had with a woman she met on a trip to Africa. I don't want to spoil the joy of it by sharing it here, but the moral/punchline is "love your tree," and now I want that on a bumper sticker.

Sometimes, in my quest to not be single, I forget that I am emotionally aloof and slightly commitment-phobic. Interestingly enough, this doesn't insulate me from liars, cheaters, bigots, or assholes. Amazing.

In an unrelated development, the fourth Die Hard movie freakin' rocks!
