Today, I light a candle in remembrance of all those whose lives have been lost in wartime, whether they wore a uniform or not. All the mothers, fathers, children, brothers, sisters, husbands, wives, friends...military or civilian, I light a candle to remember that war is not forever.
I'm sitting outside on my back porch right now, enjoying the paradox of a bright patch of sunshine on my face, with thunder rumbling not far away.
In that obligatory Memorial Day way, I fired up the grill for a turkey burger (and yes, Martha Stewart, I *pressed* my turkey burger!!) and sat out among the plants sipping champagne cut with white grape juice - the perfect antidote to the sticky humidity earlier this afternoon, before the storm winds came up.
Since I've spent most of the long weekend out here in the sunshine, I've been compulsively watering the plants, checking them several times daily for signs of wilt or other problems. During the second round of water today, I noticed that - despite the fact that I planted them only this weekend - I already have seedlings coming up! Each planter that was seeded has little baby sprouts coming up, in greater or lesser numbers. It's so exciting!
It's odd to spend the day walking between two such paradoxes as war, and brand new seedlings. Fascinating.
Here comes the rain....that's my cue to head inside. Hope you're all enjoying the holiday!
