Memorial Day.
<<<--- -- 26 May 2006 -- --->>>

I recently discovered the coolest damn thing ever in the history of music: mash-ups. Mash-ups are multiple songs squished together into one giant mega-song of kick-assity. For example:

Stairway to Bootleg Heaven
Imagine Dolly Parton's awesome bluegrassified version of Stairway, mashed together with pat Benatar's "Love is a Battlefield," the Beatles' "Because," Beastie Boys' "So Whatcha Want," plus a couple other tasty tunes. It is amazing.

No One Takes Your Freedom
Take Beatles' "For No One," add a dash of George Michael's "Freedom" and a pinch of Aretha's "Think," then toss liberally with Scissor Sisters "Take Your Mama." Sounds crazy, but rocks the house.

There are many more fabulous ones out there (notably Sting + King - "Every Step You Take" meets "Stand By Me"....also "Manic Monday" from the Bangles with Ben Folds Five's "Brick"), but these two rock the hardest of all I've found. You can pick them up, and find links to other mash-up DJs and websites at djearworm.com.

=====================================

Well, it's Memorial Day weekend. The weather is supposed to be hot and sunny and gorgeous all weekend - perfect weather for a summer holiday. I'm still sickly, but I'm going to try to do more than sleep the weekend away. I have ambitious plans to finish up my planting and get my porch all cleaned up and gorgeous and fabulous. I might even hang out and grill something. Maybe play a little gutiar, drink that bottle of cheap champagne leftover from New Year's...do a little something to enjoy the holiday. Hell, if my voice comes back, I might even do some recording.

On the other hand, I might also sleep for 60 hours straight. We'll just have to see.

Meanwhile, throughout the holiday, I want to try to hold in mind that this is a holiday for celebrating those who have given their lives in defense of this nation. I come from a military family, and generations of my forebears have fought in the America Army, serving bravely to protect our shores - and this is a day my fmaily cherishes to remember them. These days, this holiday is even more poignant than usual; every day we lose more soldiers in Iraq, more lives wasted, not in defense of this land and our freedom, but in agression for the sake of whatever twisted reason led us to invade. Whether for oil, or testosterone, or some sick military-industrial conspiracy against the poor and the middle class....it doesn't matter - there is no justification for this war.

As I'm planting or playing or sleeping this weekend, I'll be burning a candle in vigil for this war and all those who have been sacrificed on its bloody altar.
